New Members without Handicaps:

The USGA Handicap system allows all golfers, no matter their skill level, to compete on a fair and equitable basis.

Understanding your Handicap:

Depending on your gender and the set of tees you plan to utilize, each player's Handicap Index (decimal value) converts to a specific handicap for that particular course.  A player can obtain a USGA Handicap Index after posting five 18-hole scores, but a truer value comes when a player posts twenty scores, the ten best of which are used in figuring the Handicap Index.  The index demonstrates what a golfer would shoot on his/her best day.

Using Course Ratings:

Every Golf course receives both USGA course and Slope Ratings for each set of tees that is rated.  The rating established for the scratch golfer is known as the course rating.  There is also a rating for the bogey player known as Bogey rating.  This Bogey rating is not normally published, but used to determine a Slope rating.  The slope rating is and evaluation of the relative difficulty of a course for players other than scratch.  The USGA Course and Slope rating are then calculated and certified by the state/regional/district golf associations before they are issued to the club.  These ratings are vital in calculating a person's handicap for that particular course (Course handicap).
